Governor Barnett at Ole Miss.

Racism at Ole Miss:

In 1962, former Air Force serviseman, James H. Meredith, applied to the University of Mississippi and was declined because of his race. After this, the Federal Court ordered for Ole Miss to accept him but Governor Barnett of Mississippi refused and blocked access to the school. Racist riots broke out at the school targeting African American students. President John F. Kennedy ordered Barnett to take down the blockades and sent marshal's to escort African Americans to class. This event is one of the many symbols of the racist and segragated America in the 1960's.
